저는 그동안 수십 개국 나라에서 일해봤기 때문에 여러 나라의 학생들이 같은 환경에서 어떤 모습을 보이는지 보아왔습니다. 독일 학생들은 이렇게, 미국 학생들은 이렇게 하리란 것을 짐작할 수 있 습니다. 그 차이점을 말로 설명하기는 어렵겠지만 한 가지 확신하 는 것은, 한국은 함께 새로운 것을 배워나가는, 공동 학습 시스템을 만드는 데에는 단연 뛰어나며 좋은 경쟁력을 가지고 있습니다. 우리는 종종 창조를 실제와는 다르게 생각하곤 합니다. 창조란 한 천재가 혼자 방 안에 앉아서 이루어내는 것처럼 생각하기 쉽습 니다. 마치 아인슈타인처럼 말이죠. 물론 그것도 창조입니다. 하지 만 요즈음 학회에 가보면 서양의 저명한 학자들도 입을 모아 창조 는 ‘사회적’이라고 이야기합니다. 이제는 세상의 복잡한 문제를 한 명이 풀어내는 것은 거의 불가능하고, 공동 집단이 함께 풀어야 하 는 시대입니다. 세상에서 과연 어떤 문화가 이러한 집단 문제 해결 을 잘 할 수 있을까요? 미국은 아닙니다. 스티브 잡스는 놀라운 제 품들을 만들어냈습니다. 미국은 한 명의 천재가 혼자 놀라운 창조 를 이루는 것은 잘 하지만 집단 문제 해결에는 약합니다. 한국은 그 점이 강합니다.
Having worked in dozens of countries, I can see that culture influences how people learn. I don’t see American students learning in this way. Koreans have a different way of learning together. They are particularly good at collective creativity. They can be collective and competitive at the same time. In this way, their creativity looks different than it does for Westerners. Western creativity is often thought to be people working alone (coordinating later) – like Einstein. Of course, that is a kind of creativity. But, in Korea, creativity is more social. That is valuable in today’s world because the most important question are complex and will require complex thinking – the creativity of collective minds. A community must solve them together. It is Korea’s potential strong point.
